Environmentally Responsible De-Icing: Reducing Chloride Runoff

Ice Management and De-Icing

Chloride from de-icing products accumulates in waterways and soil — responsible application reduces environmental impact without compromising safety.

Road salt chloride is one of the most widely distributed pollutants in Ontario's urban waterways. Environment Canada studies show measurably elevated chloride levels in virtually all urban watercourses in southern Ontario, with concentrations in some smaller urban streams exceeding the chronic aquatic life guideline.

Best Practices for Ontario Winters

Application rate management is the most impactful intervention. The most common error in de-icing is over-application — applying more product than is needed for the temperature and surface conditions. Calibrated spreaders and operator training to apply at recommended rates (typically 15–20 g/m² for maintenance) reduce product use by 30–50% without reducing effectiveness.

Alternative products with lower environmental impact: calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) is biodegradable and does not contribute to chloride accumulation, though it's significantly more expensive than rock salt. Organic products derived from beet juice, corn steep liquor, or molasses are blended with salt brines to reduce the required salt concentration while maintaining or improving performance.

Professional Snow and Ice Control

Timing and placement precision: applying de-icer to where it's needed — the actual walking or driving surface — rather than broadcasting broadly across adjacent soil and vegetation areas reduces environmental loading. Edge trimming of applications away from drainage inlets and buffer zones adjacent to water bodies prevents the highest-concentration runoff.

Smart sensors and predictive application systems reduce total product use by applying only when conditions require it. Pavement temperature sensors connected to automatic spreader control systems ensure product is applied at the right rate for actual surface conditions rather than on a fixed schedule.
