Residential Snow Removal
Commercial and residential snow plowing differ in equipment scale, response expectations, documentation requirements, and liability exposure — understanding these differences clarifies what to expect from each service type.
Equipment scale: commercial properties typically require larger trucks (1-ton or heavier) with V-plows or wing plow configurations that can move higher snow volumes efficiently. Residential driveways are often serviced with half-ton or 3/4-ton trucks or ATV-mounted plows that manoeuvre more easily in tight spaces.
When and How We Clear
Response time expectations differ significantly. Commercial clients typically require 2-hour or less response to the service trigger, with priority service during active storms. Residential clients have more flexibility — a driveway that needs to be clear by 8 AM for work can be serviced overnight even if the trigger was met at midnight.
Documentation is a commercial requirement that's rare in residential. Commercial clients need time-stamped service logs for liability protection; residential clients rarely request this level of documentation. Commercial contracts include insurance certificates, service level agreements, and credit provisions for SLA failures — none of which are standard in residential contracts.
Winter Peace of Mind
Liability exposure is higher for commercial operators. A slip-and-fall on a commercial property involves the property owner, potentially the snow removal contractor, and the property's general liability insurer. The claims environment is more litigious and the potential damages larger than for residential incidents.
Pricing structure reflects these differences. Commercial contracts are typically priced on a seasonal or per-push basis with explicit SLAs. Residential contracts are often seasonal flat-rate or per-visit pricing with less formal terms. Commercial pricing incorporates higher insurance premiums, documentation overhead, and priority response capacity.
