Roof Snow Management
Ontario roofs are engineered to handle winter snow loads — but there are thresholds beyond which accumulated snow becomes a structural or water damage risk. Knowing when to clear your roof (and when not to attempt it yourself) is important knowledge for KW homeowners.
Most residential roofs in Ontario are designed to handle 1.9 kPa (approximately 40 lbs per square foot) of snow load. Wet, dense snow is significantly heavier than dry fluffy snow — a foot of wet snow can weigh 20-25 lbs/sq ft, approaching structural limits on flat or low-pitched roofs.
Safety and Structural Protection
Warning signs that roof snow removal may be needed: visible sagging of roofline, doors or windows that suddenly become difficult to open or close (indicating structural movement), cracking or popping sounds from the attic area, and large ice dam formation at the eaves.
Ice dams form when heat escapes from the living space into the attic, warming the roof deck and melting snow near the peak. That meltwater runs down to the cold eaves and refreezes, forming a dam that traps water and can force it under shingles into your home.
Professional Snow Guard Installation
Preventing ice dams is more cost-effective than remediation: ensure adequate attic insulation (R-50+ recommended in Ontario), proper attic ventilation (both intake at soffits and exhaust at ridge), and air sealing of all penetrations from living space into attic.
DIY roof raking: for pitched roofs, a roof rake (a lightweight aluminum rake on a long telescoping handle) allows homeowners to pull snow off the lower 3-5 feet of the roof from ground level — reducing ice dam formation without climbing on the roof.
Never climb on a snow-covered or ice-covered roof. The risk of falls is extreme. For significant accumulations or ice dam removal above the lower edge, call a professional with proper safety equipment.
