How to Choose the Right Ice Melt Product for Ontario Winters

Not all ice melt products are equal. Here's how to choose the right one for your driveway, concrete, pets, and plants.

Ice Management and De-Icing

Walk into any Ontario hardware store in winter and you'll find a wall of ice melt products — rock salt, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and 'pet-safe' blends. Choosing the right one for your specific needs matters for safety, cost, and property protection.

Rock salt (sodium chloride): the most common and least expensive option ($10-15/bag). Effective to about -9°C. Significant downsides: corrosive to concrete and metal surfaces, harmful to grass and plants in high concentrations, and can irritate pets' paws. Best for driveways where concrete age and condition aren't major concerns.

Best Practices for Ontario Winters

Calcium chloride: works to -25°C, making it effective in the coldest Ontario conditions. Generates heat when dissolving, which helps penetrate ice quickly. Less damaging to concrete than rock salt, but still harmful to vegetation. Available in pellet or flake form. More expensive ($20-30/bag) but more effective per volume.

Magnesium chloride: gentler alternative that works to about -15°C. Less corrosive than rock salt or calcium chloride, and lower toxicity to plants and pets. A good mid-range option for homeowners with pets or landscaping near treated areas.

Professional Snow and Ice Control

Potassium chloride: the most 'pet-friendly' common ice melt, effective to about -12°C. Minimal impact on vegetation when used as directed. Most expensive common option. Less effective in very cold temperatures.

'Pet-safe' blends: many products marketed as pet-safe contain potassium chloride or urea-based compounds. Check the label — 'pet-safe' often just means less harmful, not completely harmless. Always wipe pets' paws after walks on treated surfaces.

Application tips: always apply before the freeze when possible. Use only as much as needed — over-application doesn't improve performance and increases damage to concrete and vegetation. Sweep up residue after ice melts to avoid runoff damage.
