End of Snow Season: What to Do Before Spring

Snow Removal Services

The end of the snow season is the right time to review your winter maintenance performance, repair any damage, and plan improvements for next year.

Conduct a post-season property walk-through to catalogue any damage caused by snowplows, de-icing products, or heavy equipment. Asphalt cracks that were opened by plow blades, lawn edge damage, damaged landscape borders and driveway markers, and concrete scaling from salt exposure are all common findings.

Winter Preparedness Tips

Salt damage to concrete surfaces is the most widespread cosmetic issue after winter. Chloride from de-icing products penetrates concrete pores and, in combination with freeze-thaw cycling, causes surface scaling and pitting. Concrete sealer applied to cleaned, dry surfaces in early spring slows future deterioration.

Lawn recovery after winter begins with removing any sand or gravel that was tracked across grass surfaces during snow removal operations. Sand left on lawns through the growing season compacts into the surface and suppresses grass regrowth. Raking and topdressing affected areas with quality topsoil accelerates recovery.

D&D Snow Services Coverage

Schedule a post-season review meeting with your snow removal contractor before the end of March. Discuss: which events were handled well, where response time or coverage fell short of expectations, any property-specific issues that affected service quality, and any changes needed for next season. Waiting until fall to have this conversation means both parties have forgotten the details.

Evaluate your contract structure for next season based on this year's actual service events and costs. If you had a seasonal contract and this was a heavy winter, you may have received more value than a per-push arrangement would have provided. If it was a light winter, the per-push structure might have been less expensive.
