Calibrating Parking Lot Salt Spreaders for Optimal Coverage

Ice Management and De-Icing

Over-application of salt in parking lots is as problematic as under-application — proper spreader calibration ensures effective de-icing without unnecessary product waste and environmental impact.

Spreader calibration starts with understanding the design application rate for your target conditions. For maintenance ice prevention on a typical parking lot surface at -5°C, the target is approximately 15 to 20 grams of product per square metre of surface. Many uncalibrated spreaders apply 3 to 5 times this amount.

Best Practices for Ontario Winters

Calibration test procedure: weigh the product in the spreader before and after making a measured pass at a consistent speed and gate setting. Calculate the actual application rate per square metre and adjust the gate opening and travel speed until the measured rate matches the target.

Different materials require different gate settings. Wet sand, fine rock salt, calcium chloride pellets, and blended products all flow differently through the same spreader. Calibrate separately for each product type used, as a setting calibrated for rock salt will massively over-apply calcium chloride.

Professional Snow and Ice Control

Regular recalibration is necessary because spreader components wear over time. The spinner disc, gate opening, and chain or auger drive system all experience wear that changes flow characteristics. Recalibrate at the beginning of each season and whenever product type changes.

Wind conditions affect effective distribution from broadcast spreaders. In windy conditions, reducing the spreader speed or adjusting the spinner angle prevents product from being blown off the target surface. Some operators carry a small supply of liquid brine for windy conditions where granular application is impractical.
