Ice Management and De-Icing
The environmental impact of winter road and property de-icing is significant. Ontario municipalities collectively apply hundreds of thousands of tonnes of road salt annually, contributing to elevated sodium chloride levels in local watersheds, groundwater, and soil. Homeowners can make choices that reduce this impact without compromising safety.
Sand and grit: sand provides mechanical traction without any chemical melting action. It's safe for concrete, plants, and pets, and doesn't dissolve into waterways in the same way salt does. The downside: it needs to be swept up after the thaw to prevent storm drain clogging, and it has no melting effect.
Best Practices for Ontario Winters
Organic ice melts: products made from agricultural byproducts (corn-based, beet juice, or modified carbohydrates) are available at some Ontario retailers and online. They're generally effective to -15°C or better, significantly less corrosive, and much less damaging to plants and soil. They're also more expensive — typically 2-4x the price of rock salt.
Magnesium chloride: while still a chloride salt, magnesium chloride is less damaging to concrete and plants than sodium chloride or calcium chloride at equivalent application rates. A reasonable middle-ground option for environmentally conscious homeowners who need reliable performance.
Professional Snow and Ice Control
Application reduction matters as much as product choice. Most homeowners over-apply ice melt — using 3-4x more than necessary. A properly applied rate is about 30g per square metre for standard conditions (roughly one handful per metre of sidewalk). Using less still works; using more just causes more damage.
CMA (Calcium Magnesium Acetate): a biodegradable de-icing compound used primarily in sensitive areas near infrastructure. Effective but significantly more expensive than chloride-based products. Typically used by municipalities near bridges, not commonly used residentially.
The most eco-friendly approach: prevention. A properly timed pre-treatment application (before the freeze) dramatically reduces the amount of de-icer needed post-storm. Proactive application + minimal product use is better for the environment and your budget.
