Roof Snow Load: When to Worry and When to Call a Professional

By D&D Snow Services Team January 15, 2026 3 min read Blog

Heavy snow accumulation on a roof creates structural stress that most homeowners underestimate — knowing when to act can prevent a costly collapse or water damage event.

Roof Snow Management

Heavy snow accumulation on a roof creates structural stress that most homeowners underestimate — knowing when to act can prevent a costly collapse or water damage event.

Roof snow load is measured in kilopascals (kPa) or pounds per square foot in older standards. Ontario's building code specifies minimum design loads based on geographic zone, but older homes may have been built to lower standards than current code requires.

Safety and Structural Protection

Wet, heavy snow is the most dangerous load type. Fresh fluffy snow weighs approximately 50–100 kg per cubic metre; wet, compacted snow can reach 300–500 kg per cubic metre. A 30 cm deep wet snowpack on a typical bungalow roof can add several thousand kilograms of load.

Warning signs of excessive roof snow load include: cracking or popping sounds from inside the attic or upper floor, doors that suddenly become difficult to open (frame racking), visible sagging or deformation on the roofline visible from the exterior, and ice dam water staining inside the attic.

Professional Snow Guard Installation

Safe roof clearing uses a roof rake — a long-handled tool that allows snow to be pulled from the roof edge while standing on the ground. For a 1.5-storey or higher roof, professional removal using safety equipment is the recommended approach. Never attempt to shovel a steep roof in winter without proper safety harnesses.

D&D Snow Services provides roof snow removal for residential and light commercial buildings in Kitchener-Waterloo. Contact us during or after heavy snowfall events for priority scheduling on roof clearing calls.
