How Often Should You Salt Your Driveway or Parking Lot

Ice Management and De-Icing

Salting frequency depends on temperature, precipitation type, and surface material — and getting it wrong wastes money or creates dangerous conditions.

Salt works by lowering the freezing point of water, preventing ice bonding to the surface. The effectiveness of salt drops significantly below -10°C, which is an important consideration during Ontario's coldest stretches. At those temperatures, an alternative like calcium chloride or sand may be required.

Best Practices for Ontario Winters

For active snowfall, salting should typically occur before the storm (pre-treatment), during extended events, and immediately after the storm ends. Pre-treatment is the most often overlooked step — applying salt or brine before snow falls prevents bonding, making removal far easier and reducing the total salt needed.

For properties that freeze overnight, a late-afternoon salt application helps prevent ice formation during the evening temperature drop. Morning re-salting before the day's first foot traffic is equally important in below-zero conditions.

Professional Snow and Ice Control

Driveways made of interlocking brick or exposed aggregate require lower salt concentrations to prevent surface damage. For these surfaces, D&D Snow Services uses products and application rates calibrated to protect the material while maintaining safety.
