Comparing Walkway De-Icing Products: Salt vs Calcium vs Sand

By D&D Snow Services Team January 15, 2026 3 min read Blog

Choosing the right de-icing product for your walkway affects surface longevity, environmental impact, pet safety, and effectiveness at low temperatures.

Ice Management and De-Icing

Choosing the right de-icing product for your walkway affects surface longevity, environmental impact, pet safety, and effectiveness at low temperatures.

Rock salt (sodium chloride) is the most widely used and cost-effective de-icer. It's effective down to about -9°C and works quickly. However, it's corrosive to concrete over time, harmful to vegetation, and irritating to pets' paws. For these reasons, rock salt should be used sparingly near gardens or pet areas.

Best Practices for Ontario Winters

Calcium chloride is the highest-performance option. It activates at temperatures as low as -29°C, making it ideal for Ontario's coldest stretches in January and February. It also generates heat as it dissolves, providing faster ice melting. The downside is cost — typically 3 to 4 times the price of rock salt.

Magnesium chloride sits between the two. It's effective to about -15°C, gentler on vegetation and concrete than rock salt, and safer for pets. It's the preferred choice for properties with exposed aggregate, interlocking brick, or significant landscaping.

Professional Snow and Ice Control

Sand and gravel provide no melting action but offer immediate traction on icy surfaces. They're effective on very cold days when de-icers lose efficiency, and they're the safest option for vegetation. The drawback is that sand must be swept up in spring and can clog storm drains if over-applied.

D&D Snow Services uses a blended approach, choosing products based on surface material, temperature forecasts, and environmental sensitivity. Ask about our environmentally responsible de-icing options during your free quote.
